April 24, 2010 - Reno Jazz Festival Results
Combo A placed first in their division, which included 18 schools from west coast locations ranging from San Diego to Seattle. Scores are posted here. Complete festival results are posted here. All members of the combo won outstanding musicianship awards: James Gillum (trumpet), Nick Lamb (piano), Jonah Levine (trombone), Elena Pinderhughes (flute & vocals), Erik Shiboski (bass) & James Small (drums). Combo 3 placed fourth in the same division, and all its members also won awards: Harry Meyerson (drums), Grant Milliken (piano), Harrison Reinisch (tenor sax.) & Erik Shiboski (bass).
The Ensemble played a great set in a very competitive field including 13 other schools, and earned three “1” scores (excellent) for their performance. The following Ensemble players were also honored with outstanding musicianship awards: Nick Lamb (piano), Jonah Levine (Trombone), Grant Milliken (vibraphone), Elena Pinderhughes (flute) & Leah Wollenberg (violin).
April 10, 2010 - Combo A Wins 3rd Place at Monterey Next Generation Festival
Combo A played a great set at Monterey, and won a well-deserved trophy for their performance. (See all of the festival results here.) Only 3 trophies were awarded in a very competitive field of six combos, including three from arts high schools in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Nick Lamb (piano) and Elena Pinderhughes (flute) won outstanding musicianship awards; Nick's award came with a 35% scholarship to attend the 2010 Berklee Summer Jazz Camp.
March 26, 2010 - Lab II and Combo Results from Santa Cruz
Lab Band II and Combo both earned "excellent" scores in this year's Festival.
The following musicians won outstanding musicianship awards: Fred Callaway (piano), Tyler Kim-Hayes (alto sax), Sam Klein-Markman (guitar), Michael Orenstein (piano) and Hugo Shiboski (alto sax). See all of the festival results here.
March 22, 2010 - Annual Yoshi's Concert
The BHS Jazz Ensemble, Combo A and Combo 1 all performed for a full house at Yoshi's Oakland on March 22. See pictures from the show taken by Danny Levine on our pictures page. Mark Coplan, Public Information Officer for the Berkeley Unified School District, filmed the concert and clips will be posted on our video page as they become available. April 10, 2010 - BHS Jazz Combo A to Play at Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival

January 30, 2010 - BHS Jazz Results from Folsom Jazz Festival
The Ensemble, Combos A & B and Lab Band II all scored well in this year's competition, with Combo A winning 3rd place in their division.

December 5, 2009 - BHS Jazz Combo A Wins at Delta Jazz Festival
Combo A (J. Gillum, N. Lamb, J. Levine, E. Pinderhughes, E. Shiboski & J. Small) won first prize in the combo competition. See pictures and hear audio of their performance.

BHS Jazz Welcomes New Director Scott Dailey
Scott Dailey brings more than 30 years of experience as a professional jazz musician to his new position as the jazz director at Berkeley High School. The leader of the critically acclaimed Scott Dailey Trio, Dailey is a jazz pianist, composer and arranger whose playing has been compared to that of the late Bill Evans.
Dailey holds a BA in English from Stanford University, a BA in music composition from San Jose State and a BM (Bachelor of Music) in music education, also from San Jose State. He pursued graduate work in composition at Mills College, where he studied with pianist and composer Don Cardoza and composers Terry Riley and Lou Harrison. His jazz influences include pianists Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dave Brubeck and Marian McPartland, saxophonists John Coltrane and Paul Desmond, trumpeters Thad Jones, Clark Terry and Clifford Brown, and drummers Buddy Rich and Art Blakey.
